Participant Tech Requirements & Suggestions

There are many ways one can be a Participant in Writers CONduit and each role will have certain basic requirements and qualifications that need to be met. If you currently do not meet these requirements, do not despair as there are many out there who are willing to help each other to meet these needs.

HOST STREAMER

A Host streamer is the role that requires the most technical know how. You are not only streaming yourself but must know how to do a conference call with the other panelist and setting up your broadcasting software to capture the call and stream it. Often the Host Streamer will also be the Panel Moderator but not required to be. Host Streamers will also work closely with Stream Moderators.

  • Streaming Software (required): OBS, SLOBS, or other broadcasting software that is capable of capturing the audio and video of the conference call.
  • Conference Call software (required): Discord, Google Meet, Zoom or what ever you are comfortable with and is available to your panelist. Be prepared to help your panelists learn how to connect to your choice venue. There will be Voice/Video channels available on the Official Discord server reserved for Panel Use if needed.
  • Quality Microphone (suggested): Being clearly heard is very important for all panelists, including the host.
  • Webcam (suggested): While not required, it is nice for the viewers to see who is talking. If you choose not to use a webcam please have an icon with your name on it visible to the viewers.
  • Headphones (suggested): Due to the nature of conference calls, please use headphones or there will be feedback on the call.
  • A Quiet Environment (suggested): You want to avoid all background noise in your area. This includes fans, music, family members, pets, etc.

Panelist

A panelist simply needs to know how to connect to conferencing software and be knowledgeable in the panel topic.

  • Conference Call software (required): Discord, Google Meet, Zoom or whatever the Host Streamer is comfortable using. If you are inexperience with that software, please ask the host or an IT Staff member for instruction before your panel.
  • Quality Microphone (suggested): Talking is what this is all about so being able to be clearly heard is very important.

Panel Moderator

Panel Moderators will often be the Host Streamer but is not required to be. This is the participant who is to relay questions to the panelists and keep the conversation going and that each panelist is able to contribute. They are NOT required to be knowledgeable about the panel topic. The key requirement is conversation skills.

  • Same requirements and suggestions as a normal panelist.
  • Access to Google Docs/Sheets to view questions relayed by Stream Moderators.

Stream Moderator

Stream Moderators will have two main jobs during the panel. First, they are to collect questions from the chat and send them to the Panel Moderator via a shared Google Doc/Sheet. Second, they are to monitor stream chat and act as a regular channel moderator, banning/silencing bots and trolls. Stream moderators will work closely with the Host Streamer.

  • Access to Twitch (required): Knowledge of moderator procedures and tools.
  • Access to Google Docs/Sheets (required): To post questions for the Panel Moderator.

Discord Moderator

Discord Mods are there to monitor the discord channels and make sure users are following the rules and the Discord TOS. They also need to monitor the HELPDESK channel. If they are unable to assist the issue directly they are to respond to the user and direct the issue to the appropriate staff member.

  • Discord (required): Access and knowledgeable about it’s use. Experience with the MEE6 bot is suggested.

Other Staff

Other staff members are simply required to work with the Planning Committee and have ways to communicate with them that they actively monitor.

  • Discord (suggested): There are staff channels on the discord to better help with organization.
