What to Include and When: Efficient Use of Setting
June 25 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm UTC
“Nothing happens nowhere,” says Elizabeth Bowen—a quote about setting that is paired, in Janet Burroway’s *Writing Fiction*, with a paraphrase of Jerome Stern which reads “a scene that happens nowhere often seems not to happen at all.” How do we sprinkle in setting without breaking up action or dialogue? How do we use even the briefest bits of setting to help convey character and/or advance the plot? And how can we use the stories we love reading to come up with lists of new details to include in our stories when we’re completely stumped?
