How to Write a Visual Novel

June 25 @ 9:00 am - 10:30 am UTC

Find out how to plan and write your own visual novel with Sailing Ocelot. There will be strategies on how to use variables and switches appropriately, how to write the manuscript and how to choose the best techniques to help you visualise your project. First, we will discuss stylistic choices and examine approaches made by successful visual novels such as Perfect Gold, Syntherapy, Bai Qu and World of Darkness. Before you begin writing, there are many stylistic choices to make regarding whether you want to focus on a single character or various characters, how you would like to address character thoughts and the balance between dialogue and description. Then, it would be helpful to examine different methods of playing through a visual novel, from simply writing a single story for readers to enjoy alongside art and music, to creating a multi-choice story with additional gameplay elements such as mini games, inventory and collectables. This is where knowledge on the simple concept of a switch and a variable can be very helpful. Finally, we will examine freely available resources that can help you begin the journey of planning and writing a visual novel, such as backgrounds, characters, music and sound effects, whiteboards, writing software and visual novel software. For the past year I have been working on my science-fantasy visual novel code named Sea Hears Project, and I would be delighted to share with you what I have learned. Thank you for taking an interest!
