Faith in AI: Speculations on Tech & Artificial Intelligence

June 25 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm UTC

“Our relationship with true AI will always be a matter of faith, not proof.” George Dyson called it. The relationship with true (or general) AI, resides firmly in the realms of faith. All who investigate the creation of true artificial sapience are living within the hope their AI will act as intended and only develop in beneficial ways. Leaving out the mad scientist, who wants to see the world ‘get its comeuppance’, this sense of faith over proof is a central theme of the call for controlled ethics in artificial intelligence development. How does speculative science influence our science fiction? Where does the discussion of potential humanity-level change guide the plot and character-growth in our books? How far into the soft-vs-hard sci-fi discussion dare we go? Faith in AI discusses the works of past and present sci-fi authors, and our increasingly diverse viewpoints on developing intelligent tech.
